Job Advert

Jangala is a not-for-profit start-up, with a goal to develop the technologies needed to support people displaced and impacted by climate emergency and underdevelopment. We are a UK registered charity based in London.

Our first product, Big Box, is a unique rugged expandable Wi-Fi system that can connect tens to thousands of people. Big Box prototypes have helped over 30 organisations working with refugees in humanitarian crises and remote schools and healthcare clinics gain vital access to the internet. In 2020, Jangala is looking to bring Big Box to market and begin scaling up to meet the large global demand for project connectivity. In addition, this year, we will begin work on new products in renewable energy and edge computing designed specifically to meet needs in the humanitarian sector.

Jangala's work has featured in Wired Magazine and Positive News. Jangala won the TIP TEAC Special Award in 2018 and the AbilityNet Tech4Good Award Africa 2019. You can learn more about us at

To help Jangala achieve its ambitious goals, we are looking to hire a Software Engineering Lead (SEL). This will be a senior role: working closely with the CTO to develop software architecture and design patterns and, as Jangala readies to scale, helping to build a software team. Given our current small size, the SEL will be expected to be able to represent Jangala in meetings with partners and at public events.

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrable record - long or short - of writing high-quality code in collaboration with others. You must be able to show an ability to create elegant and flexible abstractions and implement them using readable, well-structured code. Jangala’s work spans embedded hardware, network and systems programming and the web, and you should be comfortable in each of these domains. The ability to work as part of a team, and show leadership and direction, is essential.

We use technologies including Go, Vue.js, Docker, AWS, Pub/Sub, Linux and OpenWRT; and in the future Rust and SDR. Familiarity is desirable but not essential.

In return, you will join a small, exciting and growing organisation with a solid track record and great ambitions. Your day-to-day work will positively impact the lives of many of the people most in need of assistance. In the future, as Jangala grows, you will help build a team focused on developing exciting products and technologies aiding climate change mitigation and adaptation.

To apply, please send a CV and cover letter to with the subject line: ‘Software Engineering Lead application/Your name.’ We’re looking for someone who can fulfil the ambitious technical expectations of the role and is motivated to help address some of the most critical challenges facing the humanitarian sector - explain why you’re a good fit!
