The Fund for Global Human Rights (the Fund) is a leading supporter of on-the-ground human rights groups around the world. Dedicated to finding and funding the most effective human rights organizations in countries from Africa to South East Asia to Latin America, the Fund offers grants and facilitates technical support to ensure the long-term effectiveness and viability of frontline groups working in challenging conditions with scant resources.

About the Position

The Communications Officer will play a key role on the Fund’s three-person Communications Unit. Reporting to the Communications Manager – Lead on External Affairs in London, the officer will be responsible for helping to develop and implement the Fund’s global digital communications strategy, with a focus on social media management, branding and design, and website publishing.

The Fund’s Communications Unit was launched in November 2017, and to date has made great head-way in building the organization’s visibility and reach. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and skilled digital communications professional to contribute to developing and managing a robust and effective digital communications strategy that supports the wider goals of the Fund’s Communication Unit and builds support for the work of grassroots human rights activists around the world.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a robust social media strategy aimed at building community and improving engagement with target audiences
  • Manage a social media calendar, develop written and multimedia content for daily posts, monitor analytics and adapt strategy based on findings
  • Grow the Fund’s Digital Ambassadors program, aimed at building an engaged and active online community in support of grassroots human rights work
  • Work with Communications and Individual Giving teams to launch strategic multi-channel digital campaigns
  • Create an advertising strategy aimed at expanding reach
  • Publish content to, and update key pages on, the Fund’s website, adhering to proper format and SEO best practices in order to drive traffic and retain visitors
  • Track website analytics and advise on website content strategy based on findings
  • Work with graphic design consultant to produce assets for social media, the website, or other internal needs
  • Advise staff on implementing the Fund’s brand through imagery, logo use, and formatting
  • Develop and send regular emails to Fund supporters and work to build the Fund’s email list through other digital channels
  • Provide support to the rest of the Communications team, as needed, in the areas of media engagement, public speaking, strategic networking and content development
  • Manage a content library
  • Produce monthly reports consolidating the communications unit’s monthly outputs

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least three years’ experience managing social media on behalf of a recognized brand or charity
  • Understanding of international and social justice issues
  • Excellent writing skills, with ability to write original copy for targeted audiences
  • Demonstrated experience increasing an organization’s digital audience reach and engagement
  • Strong understanding of Facebook and Twitter publishing and Facebook paid advertising
  • Basic knowledge of HTML (CSS a plus)
  • Intermediate skills in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, and InDesign)
  • Advanced knowledge of using a CMS (WordPress a plus)
  • Experience using an email marketing software (MailChimp, Salsa, Engaging Networks, etc)
  • Strong project management experience, including working with stakeholders across teams to assess needs, recommend strategies, set goals and establish and meet deadlines.
  • Self-starter with ability to operate at a hands-on detailed level, take the lead on complicated projects and anticipate strategies through to the end.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
